BACKGROUNDER

Peacemaking has long been seen as a formal process of signing treaties, conducted almost exclusively by men. Even the 75 year- division between North and South Korea seems to hang on a political solution. Yet, through developments in peacebuilding, peace studies and a broader partnership that includes civil society, we have come to see elements like human security, reconciliation, institutional reform, women and youth engagement and environmental health as critical elements of sustainable peace.

Preparing the environment for peace through building trust from the bottom up has been known to open the way for political peace processes. What are some of the lessons learned by women leaders who have contributed to these processes? How could these advance stability, trust-building, and a lasting peace culture on the Korean Peninsula, and around the world?
